I Must Confess…with a List of Career Highlights

Hello MummyManifesto readers!

I am confessing with Kirsty from My Home Truths and Deb from Home Life Simplified for Listmania.

They have both matched up their topics this week so we get to confess and list our past employment. What wonderful and weird jobs have we had in our career?

1993-1995: A) I grew up on a farm and during shearing season, as a teenager, my Dad used to pay us to work as a rouseabout, (Which is basically a general farm hand but in the shearing shed) If we worked the same hours as the shearing team and didn’t slack off, he would pay us  similar wage rate to the real deal. So the money was a big attraction but the actual work is hard going. That first day every bone, muscle and ligament hurts so much!

B) Also in my teens I worked as a waitress on Saturday mornings in a cafe, and then later I also worked waitressing on Friday and Saturdays nights at a local restaurant.

1995-1999: The first few years of my life I waitressed while studying at college as I didn’t have many qualifications and it was hard to get employment. I often worked either at a cafe/lunchbar during the day, then go off to another restaurant at weekends or combine it with study. I also worked in a hotel in reception, bar and restaurant for a year in the north of WA. Although I remember these times as sometimes living pay cheque to pay cheque, I have met 2-3 of my close friends during this time and are still friends with them more than 10 years on.

2000-2004  After a while I got sick of the hospitality industry but didn’t know what to do so I went back to TAFE at night and studied to be a carer looking after the elderly. This lead to me going to university as a mature age student to studying nursing. I think I was about 24-25 years old.  I worked as a carer during this time to pay the bills.

2005: After 3 long years, I am now a Registered Nurse. I do one year graduate nursing, , I win a nursing award. I meet my hubby through a blind date at work, we get engaged early 2006.

2006: I decide to study to be a Midwife ( as you do) the following year.

2007:  I am now a midwife, hubby and I get married. We have our first son the next year.

2008-2013 : My next job as a Mum… 3 boys later, I work on weekends occasionally as a midwife to keep up my registration.

As you can see, my employment history is pretty tame. Writing this list though reminds of how much energy, time and effort it took to finally get to where I am today.

I tend to take the long way round to get to where I need to end up rather than the direct route.

I am not sure where I am supposed to go from here which is giving me some grief at the moment but hopefully I find my direction soon, maybe once the kids are all at school.

What is your weirdest job who have had? Or your most enjoyable?

Thanks to everyone for dropping in for Monday’s I Must Confess and Listmania. You can visit the other linkups and see what interesting employment adventures everyone has experienced.

I think it is great that you have a profession that you can come back to as you have more time when the kids are older. My hardest part of being on “maternity leave” and then simply staying home was that i knew i would never return to my old job…a lot of my nursing friends went the route of night shifts a few times a week so they are at home and make good money at night…

Yes, Deb night duty is the preferred option if you can cope with the no sleep!

Your employment history doesn’t seem ‘tame’ to me. It’s quite impressive.I couldn’t be a nurse or midwife, I’m way too squeamish. I couldn’t be a waitress either as I have zero people skills and a bad memory. You’ve done well.

You are doing a job that I have always wanted to – working as a midwife. I love that you have managed to keep your hand in while raising your family.I think once our children start to grow it really is a time that Mums re-evealuate their lives and what they want and need from work. I am certainly in that position now.

Claire-nursing is great to combine family and work.I think Mums slowly try to find their identity as their kids grow up

Great work on becoming a midwife! Sounds very exciting. The shearing work sounds like it would be hard work!! I lived in the country for the first 15 years of my life and know how hard the people on farms work!

Weirdest job was probably the one I had in teacher’s college. I babysat 2 kids overnight as their mum was a nurse doing night shift, and dad travelled overseas for business a lot. So, as I like to say, I got paid to sleep!!!!

  • Emily @ Have a laugh on me says:

You’ve had some cool jobs! And being midwife must be quite interesting, especially when you were pregnant with a baby yourself! On our farm dad used to pay use to pick up dry pinecones in MASSIVE sacks, to use for the fire. He wouldn’t let us rousie – which I ALWAYS wanted to do. I also worked in a cinema, sunglass shop, Para Rubber, NZ’s equivalent to Clark Rubber, at a cafe, as a nanny etc. Love your list – Em x

Hi Em, did you get to watch the movies while you worked in the cinema? those pinecones sound like hard work x

Part of my first job at the service station was as a waitress. I wasn’t very good at it (I don’t think there was any part of that job that I was good at!) but it never had a dull moment. Thanks so much for being part of I Must Confess again Lisa!

  • Deb @ Aspiring Mum says:

My uncle owns a sheep and wheat station, and I remember playing in the hay bales and sheep dip (when it was empty) as a kid. The only time I’ve loved country life! I’m a nurse – currently retraining as a teacher. Midwifery was an option for me, but I decided to pursue teaching for now just to fit around the family. I may study midwifery in years to come…who knows! It’s good that you’ve kept your registration up.
